b-ecochic Homemade Baby Wipes Tutorial and Recipes

Homemade baby wipes are great for your pocketbook and your baby's health. This article will show you exactly how to make baby wipes at home.

Homemade Baby Wipes – Getting Started

homemade baby wipes, reusable baby wipes, cloth diaper wipes, cotton washable wipes, baby wipe warmerI generally fill a pitcher with warm water, add a splash of organic olive oil, a splash of Castille soap (scented or not) and if the Castille soap is unscented, I add a drop or two of essential oil.

My favorite essentials oils for baby wipes are Lavender and Tea Tree oil. Tea tree oil has antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties.

homemade baby wipes, reusable baby wipes, cloth diaper wipes, cotton washable wipes, baby wipe warmerIf you aren't using the baby wipe warmer we have, then tea tree oil could keep your wipes fresh. (Side note: If baby is battling a yeast diaper rash, try some tea tree oil in some lotion or in the wipes before resorting to medication!)

Some people use baby bath soap and baby oil, but I definitely don't recommend using most mainstream brands. When I first started making my own reusable baby wipes, I used a squirt of California Baby and some organic olive oil.

Then I figured out that the Castille soap I use for all my homemade cleaning products also works and so I am using that now and saving her bath soap for baths. Most baby oils also have chemicals you don't want on your baby, so just stick with a little olive oil from your pantry. Doing it this way saves even more money!
homemade baby wipes, reusable baby wipes, cloth diaper wipes, cotton washable wipes, baby wipe warmerAfter the baby wipe solution is made up, I just throw all my cloth wipes into the pitcher and soak them. Then I wring them out very lightly, roll or fold them and place them in my baby wipe warmer. You can also make your solution up in a spray bottle and spray it on wipes every diaper change, or simply soak the wipes, cold, in a container and use them as needed.

If you don't want to use reusable baby wipes, you will be making up a solution, soaking paper towels in it and leaving them there until you use them.

The Duggar's have a paper towel baby wipes recipe. They start with a container with a lid in which they cut an “X” so the wipes can be pulled out through the lid. They fill the container a quarter of the way up with water (you can use one of the wipe solution recipes below, instead.) Then, they take a roll of paper towels, cut them in half and place them in the container. The lid goes on and Viola! - homemade baby wipes.

This is good if you really don't want to use cloth, but I love our reusable baby wipes!
Homemade Baby Wipes Solution

Regular oil will come in a larger container, essential oils (EOs) tend to come in small bottles with droppers. I use organic when I can, for both regular oil and EO. Jojoba, Almond and Olive oil are three oils a lot of people love for making their own products. Essential oils are natural. Fragrance oils are not, and can contain chemicals that can harm your baby, so it is better to just stick with organic essential oils (EOs).

All EOs should also be diluted and placed in a carrier oil to protect baby's skin. Put your oil in the container first, add your EOs and then add the soap and water. You don't need a lot of EO, either, just a few drops.

You could set aside a designated whisk for creating personal products when you are working with EOs. You can play around with different amounts of soap, water, and oil, too. I don't like my wipes super soapy, because I dislike feeling like I am leaving soap on my daughters bum after I change her, and my recipes reflect that. You may want to do even less than the 1 tablespoon of soap in the recipes, depending on how much water you choose to use for your homemade baby wipes.

Be cautious about using essential oils if you are pregnant, especially in the first few months.

Essential Oils that are considered safe in low amounts for babies:

Baby Wipe Solution Recipes from the frugal baby(http://www.thefrugalbaby.com/baby-wipe-solution-recipes/)

I have written before about making your own baby wipes and at the time, I only included one very basic recipe for the wipe solution. So today, I’m going to give you several other recipes and you can choose the one that best fits your needs.
If you’re going to make your own wipes, you have several options when it comes to using the solution. You can simply pour the solution over the cloth wipes or paper towels (wash cloths, cut up receiving blankets, and paper towels are popular choices for homemade wipes). Alternatively, you can use a squirt or spray bottle to apply the solution directly to your baby’s bottom and then wipe with a dry cloth. You can also use a bottle to apply the solution to the dry cloth first. Personally, I prefer this method. I don’t like the idea of my wipes (particularly cloth wipes) just sitting in the liquid solution and I would rather control how much I use.
Now the only question is, which solution to use. Some of these are designed for particular needs–diaper rash, fungal rash, sensitive skin, etc. The rest are suitable for every day use. Try a few and see which ones you like best.
Very Basic Solution2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons baby bath/wash/shampoo
2 tablespoons baby oil
Herbal Solution2 cups warm brewed herbal tea (chamomille works well)
3 tablespoons olive oil or mineral oil
2-3 drops lavender oil (optional)
Soft Solution2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons baby bath/wash/shampoo
2 tablespoons baby lotion
Apricot Solution
2 cups warm water
1 tablespoon baby bath/wash/shampoo
2 tablespoons apricot oil
Lavender Solution2 cups warm water
1 tablespoon baby bath/wash/shampoo
1 tablespoon olive oil
5 drops lavender oil
Calendula Oil Solution (soothing for dry or irritated skin)
2 cups very warm water
1/4 cup calendula baby oil2 tablespoons gentle baby bath/wash/shampoo
Fungal Rash Solution (this recipe works very well on a yeast diaper rash)
1 cup cool water
1 tablespoon white vinegar
4-5 drops tea tree oil
2 tablespoons aloe vera gel (fresh from the plant works best)
Diaper Rash Solution (this is gentle and effective on a basic non-fungal diaper rash)
1 cup cool water
1/4 cup fresh aloe vera gel
Use a blender to mix ingredients together and keep solution refrigerated
Diaper Rash Solution 2 (also effective on non-fungal rashes)
2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons baby bath/wash/shampoo
2 tablespoons olive oil or mineral oil
2 tablespoons baking soda
Sensitive Solution (ideal for babies with very sensitive skin)
2 cups warm water
4 tablespoons mineral oil
Whenever possible, use all-natural ingredients. Most ingredients are available at health food stores. It's fun to experiment and come up with your own recipe, too, by mixing & matching ingredients from the different wipe solution recipes, or adding your own special touch.
Please keep in mind that if you're treating diaper rash, it's best to use plain water.
Main Ingredients
Water: Best to use distilled. Tap water goes moldy quickly.
Soap: Baby shampoo is a favorite, but baby wash, or liquid soap (like Castile) are also recommended.
Oil: Usually baby oil. You can also use Olive Oil.
Fragrance & Other: Essential oils are used both for their fragrance and other intrinsic properties specific to each oil (i.e. tea tree oil-antibacterial). Vinegar is said to help slow down mold growth.
General Methods
For dry wipes: Simply mix the ingredients into a spray bottle. You can either spray the wipe and use it wet or spray the baby's bottom for a mini bidet treatment. The solution may also be kept in a jar and cloth wipesdipped in it.
For wet wipes: You can use an empty commercial wipes container or any plastic lidded container. Mix the ingredients in a separate container. Place the wipes in the container, then add the solution, and invert a few times to make sure the wipes all get sufficiently moistened. Use just enough solution to moisten. Extra solution can generally be kept refrigerated.
For dry wipes with water only: Keep dry wipes in diaper change area and wet under tap water when ready to use. This method works particularly well for baby's with extra sensitive skin.

*Notes -- Simple Anti-Fungal WipesI made these wipes because I wanted something to gently discourage yeast diaper rashes. The vinegar and essential oils discourage yeast growth which means you shouldn't have too much trouble with these wipes getting moldy.
To prepare, use a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Pour all your ingredients in, cover the jar and shake to blend the ingredients. Place your wipes in a container and pour on enough solution to moisten them. Store any extra solution in the fridge. It should stay fresh for a long time especially if you used distilled water.
If your baby has a really red, raw diaper rash please do not use these wipes as vinegar may cause a burning sensation.

By the way, these cloth wipe solutions work great for cleaning sticky hands and messy faces as well as dirty bottoms.
I have started making my own wet wipes for my 16-month-old daughter due to sensitive skin issues. I am using baby wash cloths right now. Before I did this I had to buy expensive sensitive skin wipes. I am so grateful for your tips and solution recipes. So far I am hooked on making my own wipes. She is getting so much cleaner, has no rashes, and I do not worry about what I am putting on her skin. Thanks!

Common Cloth Wipe Solution Recipe Ingredients:

Most cloth wipe solution recipes contain similar main ingredients, which are used for the same reason in each recipe. These are the common ingredients and why they're included:
  • Oil: Helps the wipe glide across baby's skin and keeps skin soft
  • Soap: Cleanses by removing all traces of urine and feces
  • EO: (Essential Oil) Added for antibacterial and/or aromatherapy purposes.
  • Water: The main ingredient in each recipe, cleanses the diaper area and dilutes the other ingredients
The type and amounts of oil, soap, EO and water that goes into a recipe is what gives each cloth wipe solution its own distinct "personality". Have fun trying different recipes until you find the ones that you like best! More information about essential oils can be found at Bath Heaven, Aroma Web, A World of Aromatherapy and other great sites on the Web.

How to Use Cloth Wipe Solutions

First of all, please use common sense and keep all wipe solution ingredients away from your child. You may not think that these everyday products can be dangerous, but some infants have suffered respiratory problems after aspirating baby oil.
When mixing solutions we've found that it works best to start with water, then oil and finally soap. By starting with water you'll avoid making tons of bubbles, and the oil will coat your measuring tools so the soap slips right off.

There are many different ways to store and apply cloth wipe solutions, try a few of the following ideas to find the one that works best for your family. You may discover that one system works great at home and another works great away from home. Most of the time it's easiest to gently mix the cloth wipe solution in a bottle with a cover, then pour it into the storage container. Here's some ideas to get you started:
  • Use a spray bottle to spritz baby's bottom or the cloth wipes. (For baby's comfort we prefer spraying the cloth wipes)
  • Use a bottle with a pull-up spout (like on bottled-water bottles) to dribble solution onto the cloth wipes.
  • Warm solution and place in an insulated container to provide warm wipes for baby.
  • Place the solution into a commercial baby wipes container and dip cloth wipes into the solution.
  • Place cloth wipes in a commercial baby wipes container and pour wipes solution over wipes.
  • A commercial baby wipes container can be placed in a wipes warmer to provide cozy warm wipes for baby.
Don't store solution or wet wipes for a long time because they can become musty and the wet wipes may even grow mildew - ewww! Check your solution and wet wipes daily, and mix smaller batches of solution frequently instead of large batches less often to avoid mustiness. We mix fresh solution once a week, store it in a bottled-water bottle, and have not had any problems with mustiness.
*Please note: Tea Tree Oil should be diluted because pure Tea Tree Oil may cause a reaction in some people. Wikipedia has more information about Tea Tree Oil.
